“The six (of an original twenty four) monasteries are built on immense natural pillars and hill-like rounded boulders that dominate the local area. It is located near the town of Kalambaka. Meteora is included on the UNESCO World Heritage List under criteria I, II, IV, V, and VII.[3].” – Wikipedia
Tip!!! In my own opinion it is best to rent a car to go to this place especially if you are interested to go only for a day from Thessaloniki. The train has only three trips everyday 6am/815am/4pm. The cost of going on a tourbus is equivalent to two people renting a Toyota Aygo. We rented our car in Hertz Salaminos, and we paid 95 euros including the petrol for a day. Approximate driving time is 2 hrs and 45 minutes. We took the easy drive A1 route (click for link) and the terrain was flat and scenic. You will have a view of Mt. Olympus along the way. You will pass through several tunnels and toll gates. Please don’t take the alternative route from Kalampaka, it was uphill, narrow hilly and the road has plenty of bends. We took it from Meteora and we were delayed as it was difficult to overtake trucks on the winding narrow roads.
